Lining of Steelmaking Furnaces: In steelmaking, high-temperature furnaces such as basic oxygen furnaces (BOFs), electric arc furnaces (EAFs), and ladle furnaces are used to melt and refine steel. Magnesia bricks are often employed to line these furnaces due to their ability to withstand extremely high temperatures, typically ranging from 1500°C to 2000°C. Resistance to Basic Slag: Basic oxygen steelmaking, in particular, involves the use of basic slag, which has a high pH and can be corrosive to refractory materials. Their chemical stability under alkaline conditions helps prolong the service life of the refractory lining, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.

Refractory Repair and Maintenance: Steelmaking furnaces undergo significant thermal cycling and mechanical stress during operation, leading to wear and erosion of the refractory lining over time. Magnesia bricks are commonly used for repair and maintenance purposes due to their availability, ease of installation, and compatibility with existing refractory linings. They can be easily replaced or patched to restore the integrity of the furnace lining, thereby extending the operational life of steelmaking equipment.

Controlled Thermal Conductivity: Magnesia brick possess relatively low thermal conductivity, which helps to minimize heat loss from the steelmaking furnace. This property contributes to energy efficiency by reducing the amount of heat required to maintain the desired operating temperature, thereby lowering fuel consumption and production costs.
